Synopsis:
Detta manus är Alan Goodsons översättning till engelska av Bengt Ahlfors pjäs Aska och Akvavit.
Aska och akvavit är en realistisk komedi med drag av både drama och fars. I centrum står en nybliven änka, drygt sjuttioåriga Vera Malmgren och hennes kontroverser med sina fullvuxna barn, som gärna vill komma åt hennes lägenhet. Med finns också trotjänarinnan Kirsti och Veras forna älskare Viggo, som oväntat dyker upp. Gamla hemligheter blottläggs, akvavit konsumeras, barnen blir snuvade på bytet, men för övrigt slutar allt i frid och försoning.

KIRSTI LINDHOLM is standing on a ladder polishing Mannerheim’s portrait. Other signs of spring cleaning in progress are also evident throughout the room.
KIRSTI is singing aloud to herself, preferably Wagner. There is a telephone on a side table . The telephone is ringing—which KIRSTI hears, but decides to ignore. It continues to ring. KIRSTI finally gives in and climbs down the ladder to answer the telephone, but as she begins to walk toward it, the answering machine goes on. She listens for a few moments and then returns to her cleaning.
ANSWERING MACHINE (VERA’S VOICE). This is the home of Vera Malmgren, but I’m not the one speaking—it’s a machine. I’m not in right now, but if you leave a message after the beep I will get back to you. (Beep.)
ROBERT’S VOICE Mother! Are you there, Mother? Hello! Please answer, Mother, I know you’re there! Mother! Mother!!!
KIRSTI (interrupts her cleaning and picks up the receiver). Hello. … No, I’m not Mother. I mean, I’m not your mother, whoever you are … She’s not home, she went to the cemetery. … No one’s here …Yes, I’m here, but I’m only the … just a moment, I think she just came in. (Shouts.) Telephone. I think it’s Robert.
VER A (in the hallway). I think so, too.
KIRSTI. What should I tell him?
VERA. Tell him I’m dead. That’ll cheer him up.
